The Worm Trailer is a popular and educational mobile resource that can be used to process food and other organic waste at events. With the help of the worms the conversion of food and other wastes to useful humis occurs whilst at the event, and event participants are encouraged to add their leftovers. In the process they learn the correct principles and procedures for feeding a wormfarm that operates just like the one they have at home – only much bigger and with LOTS more worms.

Any surplus food that cannot be worked in with the worms at the event will also able to be taken away for sorting and feeding to chickens, worm farms and a wide assortment of compost bins within a diverse permaculture garden. The organic wastes can then continue to biodegrade in aerobic, environmentally friendly composting systems until the worm farm is again ready to assimilate the materials without going sour.

Until now it has been extremely difficult for event managers committed to sustainability to find a service to take and compost food waste plus the biodegradable single use cups, bowls, plates and cutlery that many are specifying for use at their events. Helping event managers to resolve this challenge was the objective for Sustainability Systems & Services to develop The Worm Trailer and its support functions.

Organic waste from events is usually cross contaminated, despite event manager’s best efforts, with recyclables or general waste, and this contamination has resulted in large comercial composting facilities to refuse to accept the materials, rendering all of the preliminary work to collect it and transport it a waste of time, energy and money plus it invalidates one of the important claims for sustainability for the event.

The Worm Trailer is a staffed display due to the presence of live animals (i.e. the worms!) and the trained staffer is available to provide composting and waste education workshops on site and/or one on one advice and assistance on composting and worm farming  to community members and other event attendees. Sustainability Systems & Services has found that this direct one-on-one Q&A format is the most effective for resolving people’s questions and helping them to move forward with worm farming and composting in their own homes, or even in their workplace.

The Worm Trailer has a fun and eductaional interactive aspect to it – kids and adults can dig into the castings to see the worms to help them to learn about the biology of worms and how to meet their needs to get the most from their own home worm farm. All tools and assistance are provided.

After five minutes at The Worm Trailer people are usually inspired and asking for worms and other supplies. That’s why worms, kitchen food buckets, small and large worm farming kits and also composting bins and bokashi buckets are available on the day to help people to get started.

Relevant composting and worm farming brochures and the like can be provided.
